Haskell County
 Alternative Education Center
 2012-2013

The Haskell County Alternative Education Program is designed to serve middle school, and secondary school students from the grades of 6 to the age of 21 who are at risk of failure in school and/or dropping out due to excessive absenteeism, failing grades, or negative life circumstances that cause them to be at risk. Students are referred from six area public schools including Stigler, Keota, McCurtain, Whitefield, Porum, and Bokoshe. Students are served through the middle school and secondary programs. The programs are designed to serve as a drop-out recovery program with the intent to return students successfully to the regular school system by providing one-on-one teaching, counseling, and parental involvement to aid individuals in meeting graduation requirements as set by the state of Oklahoma.

In order to meet the core graduation requirements, students are instructed through use of American Preparatory Institute Curriculum. All curriculums are designed to meet state PASS objectives. Vocational training through Kiamichi Technology Center, work- study training, and graduate equivalency are also available to students. Students are graded on a competency basis leading to a percentage  grade that in turn gives credit toward state graduation requirements.

The goals of the Haskell County Alternative Education Program are:

  • Recover dropout students
  • Provide a strong intake and screening process to determine if the alternative program is suited for the students' needs
  • Provide effective individualized instruction for each student
  • Provide extensive counseling for alternative education students
  • Work with individual students to develop a strong plan of study for each student that leads to graduation and further educational opportunities

The instructional program is directed by Dr. Mitchell Girty. Class times are 8:35 a.m. til 3:10 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Girty at (918) 967-5014.
